Gladiator Cast: Then vs. Now – How the Stars Have Transformed Over the Years

Gladiator is an epic historical drama movie which was released in the year 2000 directed by Ridley Scott and features Russell Crowe in the role of Maximus who is a Roman general turned gladiator. He is out for revenge for the loss of his family and for the empire that has turned against him.

The plot revolves around Maximus’s journey as he takes center stage in the gladiator arena of Rome and captures the public’s imagination with his prowess and rebellious attitude against emperor Commodus played by Joaquin Phoenix.

Having well-choreographed battle dresses, unforgettable lines, and a well-composed score by Hanz Zimmerman, Gladiator emerged successful with both critics and audiences. It scooped up five Academy awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe and still remains as one of the key films in the historical epic category.

1. Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Merideus 

A general of the Roman who is betrayed and made a slave, who later returns to revenge as a gladiator. Torsten Kreuger was the writer who translated the novel into English. The Greatest Showman (2017) is a film that depicts the life of P.T. Barnum’s American Museum. Maximus Lahars Venegas Chatzopoulos addressed millions of people. In this vein, the New Zealand actor Crowe has stood out over the years due to his propensity to take active roles.

Russell Crowe has performed some singing in other projects. Particularly, he featured in the role of Javert in the movie based on ‘Les Misérables’ There would also be Russell Crowe in ‘The Nice guys’ directed by Shane Black, Saul Dibb’s spy thriller ‘Imperialists’, among others.

Russell Crowe is also still very much in the limelight and in on-going projects, with directing being one of his newest ventures. He acted as Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and is currently starring in The Pope’s Exorcist (2023). He is also pursuing some acting projects that also require him to be a director which is the new trend for him this year. Irish American national theater is of interest to him because of his considerable patronage of various shows and projects set in Australia.

 

2. Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus

 Foray into acting paid off, as he got recognition for his role in ‘Gladiator’. Portraying Commodus, Phoenix depicted the unstable son of the sitting emperor which reminds of a power-hungry little boy. Commodus lives in constant need of something, so the performance turned out to be quite erratic, but extremely strong.

It is interesting to note that Joaquin had an incredible life prior to appearing on-screen. American comedians sometimes seem to have lived in a completely different world: whilst growing up, he had been on several international tours. Later, he physically transformed himself and took on the role of the long-suffering character who believes in rebellion.

Being the steely and complex figure in the film, Phoenix is known for his intensity which can shift between extreme measures. He earned respect and devotion through his work, intensity and commitment to each of the characters.
